Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony

A traditional Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony was conducted at Station Pier in Port Melbourne on Tuesday 16 April.

Elders of the Bunurong people, the Traditional Owners of the land and waters on which Station Pier is built, welcomed staff to country. They explained their long and continuing links to the area and the significance and importance of the smoking ceremony to their culture.

All members of staff took part in the ceremony on invitation from the Elders, Mark and Josh, who were representing the Bunurong Land Council.

Craig Walker, CEO of Ports Victoria, thanked them for the ceremony and for sharing their knowledge and insights into their traditional culture.

Craig said, “We look forward to continuing to build relationships with each of the Traditional Owners of the land and waters where we work and further understand the history and journeys that have shaped modern port operations.”
