Air quality monitoring at Station Pier
An air quality monitoring program is underway at Station Pier, conducted by Ports Victoria. The program started in December 2023 and will continue for at least 12 months.
The results will give a better understanding of the ambient air quality around Station Pier. They will be shared with EPA Victoria and the community.
Nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides and particulate emissions are being monitored during cruise ship seasons, the time between cruise seasons as well as during seasonal weather variations.

Previous monitoring program
In 2016 and 2017, an air monitoring program showed the air quality complied with the standards of that time. The results were publicly available on the EPA’s website.
Changes since 2017
Since 2017, two significant events have occurred that may have affected air quality:
- In 2020, low sulphur marine fuels were introduced.
- In 2022, the Spirit of Tasmania ferry service moved from Station Pier to Geelong, resulting in significantly fewer ship visits to the pier.
